Q: What are the markings made of?
A: Shinny and Co. rink markings are printed on highly durable, perforated ice mesh banner—the same material used in professional hockey arenas.
Q: Are the markings reusable? If so, how do I store them?
A: Shinny & Co. rink markings are 100% reusable.
To avoid damage between seasons, allow your rink to melt fully, below the markings, so you can lift them out of the water without resistance. Then just rinse them and hang them to dry. Once they’re fully dry, roll them up, and store them in their original box, or any dry container.
Q: Do I lay these markings directly on my rink liner?
A: No but you can lay them as close as possible to the liner. Shinny & Co. markings are designed to adhere to a base layer of ice under them, with additional layers above. There is no minimum thickness requirement for the base layer, as long as it’s smooth and even.
Q: How much ice do I need over the markings?
A: We recommend that the thickness of the top layers is between 1 - 3 inches. Your location and climate may affect this. In colder areas, or more shaded rinks 1 inch of ice above your markings may be sufficient. In places with warm spells or rinks with no shade from the sun, 2 - 3 inches will help withstand the melting.
Q: Do I have to cut the markings?
A: Yes. They are shipped partially cut, but you will need to trim them with household scissors. Simply follow the lines printed on the material.
Q: Can I customize the logo in my center-ice circle?
A: Not yet, but we’re working on that. Stay tuned.
Q: Do the markings attract the sun?
A: They do. Any color under the ice will draw the heat of the sun. The benefit to Shinny & Co. markings is that their perforated material allows the sun’s heat to pass through. This minimizes the effect on your ice, compared to paint or streamers. When the rink is not in use we recommend covering the graphics with powered snow for added protection.
Q: How long will the markings last?
A: Depending on how carefully you use and store your Shinny & Co. markings, they can last as long as 20 years.
Q: Does the color fade over time?
A: Eventually. But we print with UV-resistant ink to protect the color for at least five to seven years.
Q: Can I expand my existing kit, or do I have to buy a whole new kit?
A: We offer expansion kits for all our products. As you grow your rink, you can grow your Shinny & Co. markings too.
Q: My rink is 20 feet wide and 40 feet long, but I want to buy the Shinny Game Kit, can I do that?
A: Yes. The material in each kit is customizable. For example, we provide 21 feet of red line, including the center-ice circle. But you can trim any excess if your rink is narrower.
